Christmas Music Playlist: December 2013

Well, whadduya know... It's post number 101, and I'm finally back to stay now that I have the most hectic semester of my life out of my way!

Plus Christmas is coming. HEHE. Christmas is my favoritEST season of the year (I like it more than my birthday!) with all the decorations, the atmosphere and the peppermint mocha frappuccinos from Starbucks... (no snow here in Singapore, sadly)

Since I love Christmas, I decided it is ultimately necessary for me to craft a playlist for the rest of you Christmas lovers out there, so here are the top 10 Christmas Songs I love. (FYI, most are from pretty long ago...)

#1 All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey
This is a Christmas classic for me. I HAVE TO listen to this multiple times every year. Apart from the fact that the song itself is one of my favorites,Mariah Carey just sings it in such a way that makes me want to sing and dance along to... or it could be something that's just me.



#2 Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Christina Aguilera
Another one of my all time favorite Christmas songs by one of my favorite singers on this planet. This song is smooth and sexy.... it makes me want to cuddle.... I'm really starting to think I'm having a weird phenomenon with Christmas songs.



#3 Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Michael Bublé
Who can forget Michael Bublé when it comes to Christmas music? There's an obvious reason why his Christmas album tops the charts every year during this season. Personally, I love all of Michael Bublé's Christmas songs, but I just had to pick something I loved (and isn't on this list), so here this goes. Who can resist his voice (and his looks)?



#4 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing by Carrie Underwood
Yes, I do know my playlist is pretty mainstream, but who doesn't love Carrie Underwood? I'm not exactly a religious person, but her clean voice, this soothing song... I'd use this to soothe my nerves any day, sing to it... or fall asleep with it. One of my absolute must listen to songs when it comes to Christmas songs.



#5 My Only Wish (This Year) by Britney Spears
Yes, Britney Spears. This song is such a fun song to dance and sing along to... Definitely a song to bring up the Christmas spirit... Plus it always makes me happy instantaneously! It's like the cure for all things bad this season with it's upbeat, catchy tune. (I think I hear my brothers judging me... psh)



#6 Santa Baby by Colbie Caillat
I love the song 'Santa Baby'! I know, I know. It's really about this materialistic woman who's asking her sugar daddy for all the expensive stuff, but it's one sexy Christmas song! Plus it's soothing, so I don't really care that much about the lyrics... as long as I'm not that materialistic bitch bimbo woman.



#7 White Christmas by Kelly Clarkson
I need to stop using 'I love', but I really can't resist it. I LOVE THIS SONG TOO! This comes from Kelly Clarkson's latest Christmas album, Wrapped in Red. Although we don't have white Christmases in Singapore, a girl can dream right? (In this case I'm really hoping to get my white Christmas in Korea this year!)



#8 I'll Be Home For Christmas by Drew Seeley
If you don't know who Drew Seeley is, he's this actor/singer who sings on Disney. Or at least he used to. I really enjoy the beats of this song (YES! I stopped using 'love), and it's definitely one of the songs that have been on replay on my playlist. It's been a song I have been listening to for years... Definitely one of my favorite Christmas songs (regardless of who's singing)!



#9 Celebrate Love by Jordan Pruitt
Another ex-Disney singer. If you don't know her, she did appear on the 3rd season of The Voice, and was on Xtina's team before she got eliminated in the Battle Rounds (that really pissed me off). It's such a peaceful, soothing song by such a sweet sounding vocalist. I absolutely love Jordan Pruitt.



#10 Merry Christmas, Kiss My Ass by All Time Low
Hahaha. I just had to put this in. It's the one 'Christmas' song I sing along to ALL THE TIME (partially cos it pisses my mom off in a totally jokingly manner)! Then I start bursting out into laughter after singing it cos this song just tickles me. (Though most of the time it's probably my mom's reaction to this song) I think this counts as a Christmas song... It has the whole Christmas-like tune to it, but it could just be my twisted imagination. If you haven't already listened to it, knock yourself out.

Pop Music Playlist: March 2013

Yes, I'm on it, I'm on it!

I've been all fashion lately and I'm seriously lagging in the music department, I KNOW. so here's my playlist for the month of March.

Mini disclaimer: All songs here will be taken from genres ranging from pop/pop rock/pop country. As long as I smell a hint of pop, they're thrown into this playlist!

#1: Shake it Off by Secondhand Serenade
The fact that I bought this song the instant I could and how this is a successful change in music approach from Secondhand Serenade, I'd say that this song would DEFINITELY be on the list. It was practically a prerequisite as I was thinking of what to include on this list!



#2: This Isn't Love by The Royal
A relatively new band, and I've actually reviewed them twice (and own all their singles). Give this song a listen, it had me singing along to it on the first listen. Yes, it's THAT addictive.



#3: Boomerang by The Summer Set
I LOVE THIS SONG. I really have no idea what you expect me to say. For a band that's about to release their first album soon, I gotta say this song has got me beyond excited. It's a song I listen to almost everyday, it's a song I can't stop singing along to... I see the potential. No kidding.



#4: Heart Attack by Demi Lovato
This song has not only got my attention, it's gotten the attention of EVERYONE who's interested in Demi's music. Demi may not be the best judge, but she's definitely got one of the best vocals of the people in our generation. *wallowing in envy*



#5: Gorilla by Bruno Mars
Strangely enough, this is the only song that caught my attention from Bruno Mars' latest album, Unorthodox Jukebox. This song feels completely like a Bruno Mars song, and I love singing along to Bruno Mars' songs, so... No surprise why it's here.



#6: My Signature Move by P!nk
P!nk is one of my favorite singers EVER, and just so happens to be one of the few voices I can sing along to at my key. I've always adored how P!nk's lyrics are always so real and they really seem to show a piece of her in every song. She doesn't sugarcoat romance and doesn't show you the pretty sides of life. She gives reality. and that's probably why I love P!nk's music.



#7: Hummingbird Heartbeat by Katy Perry
Spring's here and really, there's no doubt one great song can lift your mood. Granted, this isn't new, but it's such a great song to listen to when you're out enjoying the good weather and falling in love with everything and anything simply because it's spring.



#8: Wings by Little Mix
The first group to win on The X Factor UK, and I'm telling you, these girls didn't win the competition based on their looks. Wings is one of my favorite Little Mix songs because the song really talks about spreading your wings and going for what you believe in. For a song? I'd say these four girls are living models of what you can accomplish when you spread those wings.



#9: Red by Taylor Swift
Strangely enough, it wasn't I Knew You Were Trouble or State of Grace that got to me when she first released Red (the album), but it was really this song. Sure, it talks about still loving someone, but how she uses colors to describe her feelings at the different stages... Not many of us would consider that.. Well, maybe with the exception of artists.



#10: Go To Hell by Go Radio
I confess. This is the first song I've listened from Go Radio and I happened to chance upon it when I saw The Summer Set share it when I opened youtube (to find the links for this blog). When I clicked it, I had the gnawing instinct that this song was going on my playlist, and I guess my instincts proved me right. The gruffness in the lead singer's voice and the song, it's so easy to sing along to Go To Hell. Hell, you don't even need me to tell you which 3 words are the easiest to sing along to.

Pieces of Music: Heart Attack

Yes, I'm lagging.
But hey, I'm actually hooked on this song.

I'm going to admit, this is something different from the few songs I'm currently hooked on (namely BVB and Avenged Sevenfold), and I'd say I'm liking this new song by Demi.
Let's face it. The girl seriously CANNOT pick the right songs for others to sing and really doesn't have enough experience in the industry to provide really constructive advice, but when it comes to her voice, boy can Demi sing.

I think the biggest reason why this song is becoming so popular is because most of us can really relate to this. I've italicized the lyrics that I could really relate my feelings and experiences with for you, and really, that's pretty much the entire song.

My take on the song:
It's a good song. The beats, the music...
Most of the lyrics are pretty good too. The only thing is, I really have this problem understanding the Ken doll part and washing hair and bouncing basketballs. Its almost as if that line's there so that they could fit the lyrics into the song. Really, that is the WORST part of the song for me.

Like ew. I wash my hair every night. I'm not going to be dirty (literally) just because I don't care about a guy. And does playing someone like a Ken doll mean fooling around with them?

Maybe someone needs to explain this song to me since clearly, I'm clueless about that part.

Distinctly Pamela Avery

I must admit, I used to think blogging was easy. That it's just posting photos you take of yourself and it's really no biggie

But that was before this blog. I.E. before I moved over to pamelaavery.blogspot.sg

Since I kicked off this blog where I post about my favorite styles in both fashion and music, tutorials, reviews, coordinates... I realized blogging is not that much of a cup of tea (but it's my cup of goodness).

I don't seek to follow anyone now, I just really want to be honest to my readers, to myself. I want to be distinctly me, and not somebody else.

Take fashion sense for example. I used to think it was great to blend in, to dress like how everyone else dresses. I wanted to be accepted, to be liked, to fit in. Same thing with music. I only listened to what people recommended, didn't think much about my own opinions and placed my trust in what everyone said.

I think I grew my own voice over the years. No, I KNOW. I stopped dressing to care, started to listen to whatever I wanted, openly stated my views and stopped giving a fuck (mind my language) towards anybody else. (Unless you mean enough for me to value your opinion)

Why am I talking about this now?  I see so many people talking online in ways that they never do in reality.

Trust me, darlings, conforming to what society wants of you is never the answer. It suffocates, it kills.

I'm probably the badass now that I've grown up. LOL. But no matter what, I still want to be me. I came up with 'Avery' years ago, wondered if it suited me, tried to change it, but I guess it's a part of me now. A part of my persona on this blog.

Today, I just want to declare to be distinctly me. Distinctly Pamela Avery.
I'll always be this girl you see on the blog. I'll change. But only for myself. Never for others, not anymore.

Music Review: Overworld

Before my blog turns into a fashion blog, I figured I'd better blog more music reviews. Hahaha.

I didn't see the picture when I first heard the band, but now that I'm blogging it, they do give off this Japanese anime/manga look, don't they?

The first song I heard from Overworld was Until We're Dead. If you haven't listened to it yet, give it a listen now:



I really liked the riffs and the beats of the song. It's really hard rock. So, great stuff.
BUT, when a song starts off with such beats and riffs, I tend to expect more of the song, especially because they already caught my attention with their first bar. That said, I was a bit disappointed when the lead vocals came in.

Don't get me wrong, they have great lead vocals, but I just don't see the perfect blend between the vocals and the rest of the music that I often do in hard rock - or any music. I just felt that Endigo (lead vocals) has a punk rock quality to his voice, but he's singing hard rock.

Then again, I don't discourage different genres, it's just a personal opinion on the blend of voices and music. And I'm a pretty picky person.

Another song I'd suggest you give a listen to would be Spider.



My take on Overworld?

Separately, I like the vocals and the band music. As a whole? I feel that a bit more could be done with the blend. Maybe they could try something pop rock, or Endigo could add more grit into his voice? Idk. You're gonna have to figure this out.

Perhaps their music reminds me of Black Veil Brides, and I really expected Endigo to have something like Andy's voice that it created that gap in the blending of voices and music for me... I honestly have no clue.

Nonetheless, I still think everyone should give this band a listen because they have some really sick beats and riffs. By sick, I mean I feel that it's top notch awesome.

Music Review: A New Tomorrow

What's a music junkie's greatest joy? More music. Duh.
Imagine my joy when I have more bands following me as time passes? I'm beyond happy.

Most of the bands I've reviewed are from the Americas, so I'm psyched that today's band is from London. The last time I've been in London was 8 years ago, but I think bands always bring different styles that excite me. Makes me want to visit the world musically actually.

I'm digressing. I should really be talking about A New Tomorrow.

To some extent, I feel that One Direction has become so big that they're probably one of the first bands you'll listen to that you forget the presence of rock bands in London itself.

I kinda liked 'What They Can't Steal From You' by A New Tomorrow. What sucks is that they don't have a full version of the song on youtube, so here's the closest snippet of the song off their channel:

On the other hand, they do have one song on youtube and it's called Brighter than the Sun! Do check this out!




I'll be honest here, here's where I think the band stands at the moment:

Before you stop caring about them, LISTEN.

A New Tomorrow isn't bad. They just haven't really blown me off my feet yet. I feel that What They Can't Steal From You, Love Utopia and Brighter than the Sun are songs that are kinda good, but not exactly there yet.

Ugh. Where's my vocabulary when I need it! I think the band is definitely going in the right direction with their music, but I just feel that I can't exactly connect with the songs just yet. It's like, I like the song, but I don't think it's fantastic.

To A New Tomorrow if you chance this page: I don't mind if you hate this review because I gave you a lousy rating. This is really my honest opinion of what I hear from you. Music can always be improved, bands always mature. I'm sure A New Tomorrow can be great, just now may not be the time yet. Please don't kill me for this, but keep reading my blog!

Music Review: The Royal (Part 2)

 The Royal is probably one of the first bands I've reviewed since I started this blog, and when they released their new single 'This Isn't Love', I found myself loving the band more than I already did.

This band is seriously rad! The pop rock beats are always a great melody to listen to when I decide to calm my ears after listening to long periods of hard rock. Not to mention how This Isn't Love had me singing to it after a couple of listens! You guys HAVE TO listen to this!



This Isn't Love boasts of pop rock beats that'll have you tapping your toes and singing to it, and eventually dancing in your room (like Taylor Swift in You Belong With Me). Once again, The Royal blew me away with the perfect blend of beats, melody, background and vocals. It's the perfect fuse of the elements... God, I love it. (and my iTunes page is open as I blog this... Definitely buying this song! - PS. Update: I've already bought ALL their songs on iTunes)

Seriously though, The Royal has never failed to impress mefrom their rendition of Die Young to Girl Like That, to Freaks and This Isn't Love. I have no idea why these guys aren't signed yet because I think they have so much potential in them!

Since I've started my half ratings, here's what I think of The Royal:

It's no question that The Royal is  crazy talented and obviously know what they're doing. And I promise you, this grade has nothing to do with the fangirl in me. I wasn't totally convinced when I first listened to them because they didn't have much music on their YouTube page, but they're pretty successful in getting me on their side. (and falling for them. YES, I know I've said this a lot.)

Still, I'd love to hear MORE from The Royal. Perhaps you could show us a different side of you by trading the pop beats for something a bit more mellow? Like the acoustic version of Die Young.

Don't worry too much about the feedback. You already have a fan in me. I'll always be on your side. HEHE.

Song Review: Shake It Off

My hands have been itching to write this post since I first heard this song...

With Secondhand Serenade being one of my all time favorite bands, my first instinct was to get my hands on this song ASAP, so I bought it off iTunes the instant I could... Only to be pleasantly surprised by Secondhand Serenade.

It seems like Secondhand Serenade has ditched their usual acoustic sounds (momentarily) and moved on to something more upbeat, more... pop.

It's not a bad thing. Shake It Off is a really refreshing song with upbeat yet relaxing beats that makes me start singing along to it the moment I started listening. I think Secondhand Serenade has really shown their growth in this song. Or perhaps their versatility in music.

Shake It Off was a really unexpected turn from Secondhand Serenade's usual songs, and it shows us a different side of the band. Plus it shows how versatile John Vesely's voice is (not that I didn't already believe in John's talents...)

That said, here's what I think of the song:

 I swear this rating is not my bias self speaking. (Not much anyway) I mean, I'd listen to Shake It Off on repeat even if I wasn't a HUGE fan of Secondhand Serenade.

Hey. They made me, picky music junkie, place Shake It Off on repeat, and made me sway and sing along to this song on a rainy day. I think that's a pretty feat. Don't you?

Besides, when you hear the reasons behind this change of pace in Vesely's music, I think you'd start to love this song more. I mean, that's what happened to me. Personally, I feel that music that reflects your current state of mind will always be the best music. So, it's great that Vesely's moving on to happier days. (That's what fans would want, right?)

Besides, what's not to love in this new single by a humble band?

There's no need to hope John... I LOVE it beyond words! (Half the time, attitude counts!)

This song is beyond amazing and on repeat infinitely... at least for now. (But I don't see myself getting bored of it anytime soon... In fact, I think I'm falling more in love with this song as I listen to it!)

PS. The last time such a phenomenon happened to me was when Maroon 5 released Payphone.

Music Review: Something You Whisper

A follower on twitter (@Marlizette) recommended this band to me. I seriously love it when blog readers start recommending bands to me. Especially so when I find myself liking the band they recommend.

That's what happened when I first listened to Something You Whisper.

 
My first impression of Something You Whisper was that they're a punk rock band, but I realized they have hard rock elements in their music as well, which is really cool.

To be honest, The Greatest Hiding Places was the song that pretty much determined their standard for me. Give it a listen!



I guess my first impression came from this song. Their lead vocals, Wes Will, has this really classic punk rock voice, that I guess made me theme the band as punk until I listened closer to Something You Whisper's music.

The Greatest Hiding Places is a great blend of vocals, melody and bass. I must admit, I do want to sing along to this song after giving it a few more listens. BUT, I did think the song ended kinda abruptly. Not that it's a bad thing, but I feel a bit short-changed because I got really into the song... and it ended. LOL. Nonetheless, I still love this one.

20/20 In The 3rd is the latest single released by the band. I felt that the song definitely defined the band's direction in music - ie. Hard Rock (do correct me if I'm wrong) - and I did feel that they've matured a little since The Greatest Hiding Places.

If you like Punk, stick to The Greatest Hiding Places, but if you want to hear more, I guess 20/20 In The 3rd is something you should check out. I must say I was a bit intimidated by the rough voice in some bits of the song, but otherwise, I think this song is pretty great!

(I did find an awkward part that I THINK could be improved, but I can't find it now. Wait. I got it. It's on 1:23. I like the semi-shout - semi cos it's not exactly a shout - in 'Am I good enough for you' but I felt the transition to the next verse is a bit awkward and kinda off.) Then again, this is a TIP.

That being said, here's what I think of Something You Whisper:

 I mean, I think Something You Whisper is pretty great, and I seriously think Wes Will has this really awesome quality to his voice that makes me want to listen to more of their songs. Plus they have really good blends when it comes to melody and bass (which is absolutely important and crucial in rock music).

BUT, I think that I can't seem to find a lot of recordings/good quality versions of their music on their YouTube channel, so I'm still a bit hesitant to give them a four... Maybe when they start releasing more songs this year...

Considering the fact that they're promising more things to come in 2013, I'll definitely be watching these boys.

February: The Rock Music Playlist

I always rave about rock, and since the end of February's coming, I've put together a rock music playlist for all of you to check out!

PS. It's not in any specific order!

(forgive my crappy picture. I did it in a bit of a rush...)

#1: Space Queen by The Mid-Summer Classic
 Remember this band I reviewed in January (See post here)? They're back with a new song and I think it's great! Space Queen gives a different vibe from what I heard in Delanie, and to be honest, Space Queen is more my speed. (What can I say? I love the harsher beats.)

I feel that The Mid-Summer Classic have definitely grown from We Had It All that speaks of similar beats as in Space Queen. Space Queen sounds so much more refined and professional (wait for it)... I love it!

Space Queen is something I can't stop playing, so it definitely qualifies for my Rock Music Playlist this month.



#2: In The End by Black Veil Brides
Firstly, this is Black Veil Brides. Secondly, I believe I've said all I needed to say about how much I love this song in my review of their album (see here). I play this every morning, night, and times in between. I just can't stop playing this song! It's like Black Veil Brides has drugged me and now I'm addicted.

This song is the bomb.



#3: Enemies by Shinedown
Now I feel like I haven't done Shinedown any justice. Since my overpowering love for rock music didn't start too long ago, I only discovered Shinedown this year, and I love them.

This song is good for some anger venting, head banging, rocking out, working out time. (Or perhaps more times that I've failed to mention.)



#4: Sex, Drugs and Violence by Green Day
 Once again, we're talking about Green Day here, so the fact that it's on my playlist is moot. Nonetheless, Sex, Drugs and Violence is such a great song to rock out to (and listen to on any day) with its fast tempo.

Besides, this has to be my favorite song out of Tre (their 3rd album in 2012). Don't ask me why. I just do.



#5: Porcelain Doll by Cartographer
I've loved Cartographer since I first heard their music. The best things about this band? They're crazy sweet to fans (like me) and they actually went down the 'Hard Rock' route as opposed to pop rock. I'm not saying pop rock is bad, but I think it's a daring move.

Porcelain Doll is the latest song by Cartographer and I seriously think that adding it on my blog would do it far more justice than a simple tweet to the band. While Porcelain Doll is a little more mellow than some of their other songs, I really love how they brought the energy of the song up in the chorus. But then again, this is my opinion. You have to hear it for yourself.



Tip: The chorus needs a bit more base in my opinion. The song's good. I'd love it more if it had more base to it cos the vocals are a bit hard on the ears without enough base. Then again, just an opinion! Keep up the good work!

#6: Die Trying by Art of Dying 
 Another band I only came to know of this year, but I seriously think Art of Dying has a lot  of potential in the music industry. These hard rock/metal beats are seriously sick!

Die Trying is a song I could relate to the moment I heard it, and I'm pretty sure most of you will feel the same way too. Especially if you've ever had something you wanted so much that you gave it your all to achieve it.



#7: Riot by Bullet For My Valentine
I'm gonna admit. I was never into metal until recently, so Bullet For My Valentine is another band I've come to know of. In fact, Riot is THE song that decided my fandom. I love their attitude in Riot!

I mean, the lyrics may not be the most motivational, but the guitar solo is pretty amazing and this song is definitely a pretty great song to rock out to with the steady beats that make me wanna bang my head to the music.



#8: Supremacy by Muse
This has been a song on repeat since Muse first released The 2nd Law! Need I say more?

Muse is probably one of the most distinct bands I've ever listened to with their eerily haunting melodies that leave you wanting more. I can't believe I used to think Muse was weird! They're eccentric, unique and madly talented! I wish I went to their concert in Singapore years back!

I do recall thinking this being a better song that Adele for the Bond movie that released last year... Oh well.

Personally, I really like the starting of the song. It really grabs your attention, and then the bridge to the guitar solo... It's AMAZING. Mad love this one.



#9: Since You're Gone by The Pretty Reckless
They haven't been releasing much, but I like singing to The Pretty Reckless. Coincidentally, Taylor's low vocals match my key, so this is definitely a song that I've been playing and listening to.

For those who haven't heard, it's pretty good. Great rock beats, female vocalist. Yes, FEMALE. I have no idea how Rock music managed to survive with the few female vocalists, but when I hear of one and she impresses me, you can see how that goes... Either way, LISTEN. Girls FTW!



#10: Carry On by Avenged Sevenfold
Here's the thing. When it comes to rock, one of my all time favorite hard rock/metal bands that I've loved for AGES is Avenged Sevenfold. They are so freaking awesome and talented that I don't give a fuck how old their songs are. Each one is crazy awesome as it is.

I crazy love this song they released for Call of Duty! I play it every time of the day. Even when I just wake up or when I'm going to sleep. It's so fucking awesome I think I can spend a post on this, but I'll just spare the non-metal listeners a post.

THIS SONG IS A MUST LISTEN. I don't care what you have to say about this.



BONUS: My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up) by Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy is back in 2013!
This song is something I found myself singing to the moment I heard it.

Light em up up up~ Light em up up up~ I'm on Fire~

Just listen. It's Fall Out Boy. They're hardly ever back. Though I wouldn't exactly put this song in the punk rock music genre. Hell, just listen!



Alright. I hope you really digged the songs I chose for my February Rock Music Playlist. I'm sorry I may have chosen one too many metal pieces, but March will probably be all about pop and pop rock, so hang in there!

Music Review: You End Me

I just realized it's been ages since I last did a music review... Some really great bands have been following me recently, and I just haven't had the time to review anything! It sucks being busy with schoolwork AND falling sick.

You End Me is one of the newer bands I've come to know of, and I'm seriously digging their music.



Their single Dead End boasts of punk rock beats that keep you wanting for more. Dead End sounds like a really professional song that will definitely have you singing along to it once you've had a few listens.

Another one of their videos that caught my eye (or ear) is their take on Justin Bieber's 'As Long As You Love Me'.



I felt that they gave the song a rock beat that is distinctly different from how Justin did his. In fact, I found this rock version more refreshing! Good job guys!

That being said, here's what I think of the band:

I seriously love the lead singer's voice and their style, but in my opinion, You End Me needs more songs to allow me to give them a better review. I mean, if every of their songs are going to be as stellar as As Long As You Love Me or Dead End, then I'd say we're going to have a new pop/punk rock band we're all going to love, but in the meantime, I'm withholding judgement.

Nonetheless, I do love You End Me's music and will definitely keep checking this band out for any new music! So don't give up on what you love to do guys, I'll always be hanging around scouting new music to fall in love with!

Music Review: Artist Vs Poet

For today's music review, you may recognize the lead vocals from the band from somewhere else...

Actually, Artist Vs Poet has been following me for awhile on Twitter and I feel that it's only right to spread some love on this band I've come to love (especially since I was in complete support of Joe Kirkland when he was on The Voice).

The first thing you'll notice if you Google Artist Vs Poet would definitely be the three delicious guys currently in the band (I'm speaking from a fangirl's point of view). BUT, what you don't see, is the fact that this band has the talent to match their looks. (Meaning: It's not all about looks with them.)

When I first decided to check the band out, I was psyched. I was completely blown away by Joe's performances on The Voice that I had a certain level of expectations for them. Good part? They didn't disappoint.



Wait For You struck me as the perfect song to listen to on a nice day. It's one of those songs I'll want to play in my car (if I owned one) as I let my hair down. It's upbeat, yet really relaxing - something you'd definitely enjoy listening to when you're trying to calm yourself from a tiring day at work or school.

While it is unlike Gives You Hell, I'd say I love this side of Artist Vs Poet just as much. It shows a different quality in Joe's voice...

Anyway, here's a cover they did:



Yes, it is originally sung by Maroon 5, which makes this very hard for me.
Firstly, Maroon 5 is one of my favorite bands, EVER, and I can be a bit judgmental or harsh since I'm mostly married to the original. Plus the fact that it is one of their more recent songs, which brings the whole comparison thingie to another level.

I love Joe's voice (as usual), but I felt that the verses were a bit harsh. The harsh verses actually made it a bit hard for me to listen to the song, but I really like how Artist Vs Poet did the chorus. What I feel could have been done better would be Artist Vs Poet taking a more personal stand on the song? Because at the moment, the melody feels so much like the original that I don't feel that I get a glimpse of Artist Vs Poet because it's too much like Maroon 5's version. But then again, that's my take on it.

Anyway, here's what I think of Artist Vs Poet:

 I really love their original songs, but I do think they could do better and try to develop their own styles when they decide to cover any other songs by other artists. Nonetheless, I see the potential in Artist Vs Poet and I'd still check out (and most probably love) whatever new music they produce in future!

I actually did this post now because this is what's happening a week from now!

 That's right! On February 27, Artist Vs Poet will be opening for Secondhand Serenade (another great band I love) at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California!
I have no idea whey they didn't do it when I was traveling the West Coast, but for those of you who live nearby, you have no excuse! Secondhand Serenade and Artist Vs Poet are two amazing bands you have to listen to and trust me, it will do you good to listen to them live!

Music Review: What About Now

  

One of the bands I've loved for ages is Bon Jovi. I think nobody can disagree with me on this one. Bon Jovi is probably one of the best rock bands that ever walked the Earth (apart from the Rolling Stones and the Beatles), no questions asked.

So, when Bon Jovi released their latest single, What About Now, it became my number 1 priority to give it a listen.

Truth, it didn't really appeal to me the first time round. But, as I gave it a few more listens, I started to like it better. To some extent, I felt as if I transcended back into the old Bon jovi era with What About Now. This song is so distinctly Bon Jovi, there's no denying it. It's probably one of those songs you can NOT know, but tell that it's a Bon Jovi song the moment you hear it playing on the radio.

Suffice to say, I love Bon Jovi and love this song since it boasts of old Bon Jovi, and I could tell that Bon Jovi seems to be sticking to his roots and producing what he knows, instead of desperately trying to fit into the current music styles.

So anyway, here's what I think of What About Now:

It's a 3.5 (rounded up). I love this new song because it's so distinctly Bon Jovi, but I feel that I would have loved it if Bon Jovi tried to adopt a slightly more current music style. I wanted to see some growth and maturity in Bon Jovi's music through the course of time, but I feel that this song didn't do it for me.

Perhaps this is also because of the classics Bon Jovi has released that led to really high hopes for Bon Jovi's new single. I felt that it wasn't an instant connection with What About Now like those in It's My Life or Wanted Dead or Alive.

Still, this is a good song to listen to! Hope you guys will enjoy it!

(What am I talking about. This IS Bon Jovi. You're bound to love it. Duh.)

Music Review: Mirrors

When I gave Mirrors a listen, I was a bit skeptical since I was hugely disappointed with Suit & Tie, but it wasn't as bad as Suit & Tie after listening to it.

Wasn't as bad meaning it's definitely better than Suit & Tie, but it still isn't something that's fantastic enough to be on repeat - or top the charts in my opinion. The beats are typical of Justin Timberlake, and once again, I feel as if I don't see any growth in Timberlake as a musician after his long hiatus.

What I didn't like most are the repeating beats and the fact that the song is heavily auto-tuned. I don't hate auto-tune, but I honestly think the song could have done a better with less of it. To have a great single is not to reuse beats or adopt methods everyone else are doing. It should be about showing a side of yourself through the song.

I honestly felt that I couldn't connect with this song, and I'd gladly tell you I'm not a huge fan of Mirrors. (Neither am I looking forward to Timberlake's new album.)

Honestly, the rest of the tracks on his album had better be good, because right now, I feel that I'm only getting a 3/20 experience from Timberlake's two singles Mirrors and Suit & Tie.

Music Review: The Summer Set

Another review for a 'verified Twitter account' band! Yay! It's not actually about the verification, but how honored I feel to have these bands following me.

Today's band is The Summer Set.
This band lives and breathes Punk Rock. I'm a HUGGEEE fan of punk rock bands like All Time Low (I know I mention them a lot...), Green Day, My Chemical Romance, just to name a few.
But even before I gave their songs a listen, the first thing I noticed was a female band member! A drummer nonetheless! Finally! A bit more proof that females CAN rock!! #feminism

Anyway, the first song I checked out from them was their new single, 'Fuck U Over'.



First comment? I love Brian Dales' (Vocals) voice. His voice is so unique I can't even place someone who sounds like him. It's different, in a good way. I get the feeling if I ever hear The Summer Set's music on radio, I'd be able to identify them because of Brian's voice.

While Brian Dales' voice has my fan vote and their punk rock beats and tune has gotten my thumbs up, they didn't manage to win my heart in 'Fuck U Over'. I guess I'd prefer to hear a song about someone's heart being broken or a love song as opposed to a song about how a guy fucked a girl over. That being said, as much as I loved the melody, the beats and Brian Dales' voice, I don't think this is going to be The Summer Set's winning single. But I'd have to say some parts of the lyrics in Fuck U Over did give me a few laughs... Maybe the occasional humor in the song would win the hearts of other girls?

Anyway, I'm kind of sold on them with their other songs:





I seriously love their music. Or punk rock. Maybe both. Probably both.
I'd have to say Mannequin got my vote more than Fuck U Over. It's the lyrics I guess... but I do like Fuck U Over's tune more than Mannequin so that's definitely an improvement in their music over time! Time sure does wonders...

So here's where they are on my scale:

It's actually a 3.5, but here's why they got this rating. I may have marked them down A BIT because Fuck U Over didn't win my heart, but I feel that there is so much more potential for The Summer Set to grow. As of now, The Summer Set's tunes are pretty stereotypical for a punk rock band, and I'd really like to hear them try out something different (within or outside of the punk rock genre)

Nonetheless, I love Brian Dales' voice and their rockin female drummer (Jess). Most importantly, I like their music regardless. Of course, I may not be completely sold on it yet, but The Summer Set is definitely a band I would be watching out for.

To The Summer Set: Hey guys! I hope I didn't sound too harsh here, but I was just throwing out what I felt about your music. Hope you won't hate me for this, but in all honesty, you guys are truly great and I seriously believe you have the potential to make it big like All Time Low! xoxo

Album Review: Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones

I must say, I wasn't a big fan of Black Veil Brides... until their latest album 'Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones' hit my iTunes library.

Before you go about thinking, 'I'm not interested in a metal band, blah blah blah~', maybe you could give their single, 'In The End' a listen!



In the music video for In The End, you'll not only find the yummy looking Andy Biersack (who's sadly taken by the gorgeous Juliet Simms), you'll also find an amazing guitar solo and beats that complements Andy's vocals. I love deep, gruff voices when I listen to rock and I enjoy playing the air guitar to guitar solos that just blow me away... so I think you can see where I'm going with this album right?

Wrong! In The End is one of my favorite songs in the album, BUT I do love a lot of the other tracks on this album, such as Wretched and Divine and Shadows Die just to name a few.

I personally feel that this is THE BEST album that Black Veil Brides has put out since they're debut and I really love the direction they're heading in terms of musicality.

Remember how I said non-metal music listeners should give Black Veil Brides a listen just above? Here's the thing. If you seriously love Linkin Park (and other similar bands), I think you should give this ENTIRE album a listen!

In terms of how I felt:

It's a winner. I love the beats, the vocals, the guitar solos... This album is what's on replay in my iPod and iPhone as of now! Just love it to bits! (I may even run out to grab a hard copy of it in stores soon! and when I say that, it means the album is THAT good.)

So my wild ones, grab your headphones and speakers. It's time to play some Black Veil Brides.

Music Review: The Icarus Account

When I see a band following me on Twitter, my mind goes 'YAY! More music!"
When I see that it's a verified account, my nerves start tingling... It probably means good music is coming my way.

That's exactly how I felt when I woke up this morning to find a follow from The Icarus Account. In all honesty, the first thing that caught my attention wasn't the fact that they were a band, but this:

Gave me a good laugh when I first saw it. From that moment on, I realized I HAD TO check The Icarus Account out!

Funny pictures aside, I was treated to this lovely acoustic band in the morning when I gave their song 'Favorite Girl' a listen.



It wasn't noisy or too upbeat that would usually piss me off in the morning (I'm usually in need for softer music when I wake up), but also, I really loved the soothing quality of the voice and music in Favorite Girl. Of course, The Icarus Account does have some other songs you should check out:







Then, when I checked out their YouTube page, I found myself pleasantly treated to the numerous covers they've made out of various hit songs by popular artistes. Some of my favorites would definitely include:









Fine, so maybe I put Payphone there because Maroon 5 stays at one of my favorite pop rock bands since FOREVER, but The Icarus Account did make a really great cover out of Payphone. I love Adam Levine's version, but The Icarus Account managed to cover it and make the song theirs. (Praise for it not being a mere copy!)
My personal favorite would definitely be their cover of The Wanted's 'Glad You Came', but nonetheless, I love how they're able to make a song their own whenever they do a cover! Covers of popular songs are usually subject to more criticism, but from the way they managed to pull it off, I'd say they're sounding as good as the actual songs in most of their covers.

If you love acoustic music and bands like Secondhand Serenade, The Icarus Account would be a band you should definitely check out.
That being said, here's what I think about them:

They probably didn't get a 5 because as much as I love what they're doing right now, I feel that they could be better if they tried branching out beyond acoustic and probably into more upbeat music? I guess I didn't give them a 5 because I would really love to hear The Icarus Account go beyond their comfort zone and try out different kinds and genres of music (because I feel that they really are talented enough to do that).
I love acoustic songs, but I know of people who prefer upbeat songs too, so maybe they'll get a bigger fanbase if they try something of that sort? (Think All Time Low or McFly?)

Either way, I still feel that The Icarus Account is a band you should and will love once you give them a shot. They have really great vocals, they're talented with the guitar... What's not to love? I'm definitely a fan of theirs. No questions asked.

PS. They have that many videos because I'm having a hard time deciding which songs I should put up here. BUT, this is merely the tip of the iceberg! Check out their YouTube for more songs!

Music Review: Enjoy the ART OF DYING

I'm feeling a bit conflicted. How am I supposed to look like a music critic if I get all these FUCKING AWESOME BANDS?!!!
And that's exactly what I was thinking when I heard today's band.

This is probably the first band review where I actually have a band with a verified Twitter account and is signed to a label. I have no idea how they managed to go under my music hunting radar all this time but I'm so freakin glad I got the chance to know about them cos they're so crazy good!

Of course, I expected a band under a record label to be good, but I thought since I've never heard of them, they couldn't be THAT good, and God, did they prove me wrong. Here are some of Art of Dying's music you should check out if you haven't heard of them:







I'm not repeating how much I love Rock music once again, because it's pretty self explanatory from my reviews and dressing. I love the gruffness in Jonny's voice... It's blends so beautifully into the music and its so necessary for someone singing Hard Rock. Not to mention how Jonny managed to transcend from a soft, mellow tone in 'Sorry' into his gruff rocker voice for the chorus and still sound so completely perfect. (Believe me, it's not easy. Took me ages to get a growl out.)

Personally I'd prefer something more upbeat (at least as of now), so I'd say my favorite out of the above 3 will definitely be 'Die Trying'. It's so easy to relate to the lyrics, the obvious line and the one I relate to the most being 'If it takes forever, I will die trying'. Not to mention how I love Jonny's voice and the entire melody and beat of the song. It's probably one of their best songs in my book.

If you haven't pressed play on any of the above video, I'd say if you love Hard Rock and music from people like Avenged Sevenfold, Shinedown or Breaking Benjamin, this is one band you'll HAVE TO check out!

Here's some background on Art of Dying. The band was formed in 2004 by lead singer, Jonny Hetherington, and guitarist, Greg Bradley. Art of Dying was signed to Reprise/Intoxication Records founded by Disturbed members in the end of 2009.

Besides being signed, Art of Dying has performed in numerous tours, such as 2011 and 2012 Avalanche tours fronted by Stone Sour and Shinedown, and also toured Rockstars' 2011 Uproar Festival fronted by (one of my favorite bands) Avenged Sevenfold.

So you see, these guys have been around for awhile... How they stayed under my radar, I'll never know, but I'm surprised that they haven't moved up the ranks to join Shinedown and Avenged Sevenfold by now. I mean, they're that FUCKING GOOD! And I'm definitely a fan. No questions there. (In fact, I got all their music!)

The band has released 3 albums as of date, among which one is an acoustical compilation of their songs. So, whatever music is up on this post is barely scratching the surface of the crazy amount of talent this band has! With this said, there's no doubt where my heart lies with this band:

They're good. In fact good isn't doing their music enough justice! They're FUCKING AWESOME!!! (and I only swear when something's THAT good!) They're seriously underrated and deserve more than what they have right now. (I'm not even sure 5 Crowns do them justice... They probably deserve 100 of it!)
